How to Host a Website on IPFS: A Step-by-Step Guide Using a Real Case Study

As the internet continues to evolve, the concept of Web3 is becoming increasingly important. But what exactly is Web3? Think of it as the next generation of the internet, where the focus shifts from centralized control to decentralization. In Web3, users have more control over their data and digital identities, all thanks to blockchain technology. This transition promises a more transparent, secure, and user-driven online experience.

One of the critical technologies underpinning this shift is the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). IPFS is a protocol and peer-to-peer network designed for distributed file storage and sharing. Unlike traditional methods, where files are stored on a single server, IPFS breaks files into smaller pieces and distributes them across multiple nodes. This not only enhances speed and efficiency but also increases resilience and reduces the risk of censorship.

To better understand how this works, let’s walk through a practical example: hosting a website on IPFS. I’ll use a real case study to illustrate the process, focusing on my portfolio website, Umbrellight.com, which was originally hard-coded using traditional web tools.

Step 1: Building the Website

Our starting point is a portfolio website, meticulously crafted to showcase a diverse range of web development and programming skills. This website serves as a testament to years of experience and continuous learning in the tech industry, and highlights freshly acquired skills in programming.

Development Environment

The website was developed from scratch using Visual Studio Code (VS Code), a widely trusted tool among developers for its flexibility and robust feature set. The site itself is hand-coded, leveraging foundational web technologies:

  • HTML5 for the structure of the content.
  • CSS3 for styling and ensuring a consistent visual experience across devices.
  • JavaScript to add interactivity and dynamic features.

Initial Hosting on GitHub

Initially, the website was hosted on GitHub, a common practice for developers. This approach not only allowed for version control but also made the site easily shareable and open for collaboration. Hosting on GitHub Pages provided a reliable and straightforward method to get the site online, while also integrating seamlessly with the development workflow.

However, with the growing interest in Web3 technologies, the next logical step was to explore how this traditionally hosted website could be transitioned to a decentralized platform like IPFS. This move aligns with the principles of Web3, offering greater control, resilience, and innovation in how web content is managed and delivered.

Step 2: Deploying on IPFS with Fleek

The next step involves deploying the website on IPFS. For this, we’ll use Fleek, a platform designed to simplify the process of hosting websites on Web3. Fleek automatically integrates with GitHub repositories, making the transition to IPFS smooth and efficient. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Sign Up on Fleek: Start by creating an account on Fleek. This platform is user-friendly and designed to cater to both beginners and experienced developers.
  2. Link Your GitHub Account: Once you’re signed in, link your GitHub account to Fleek. This allows Fleek to access your repositories directly.
  3. Select the Repository: Choose the repository containing your website’s code. In this case, we’ll select the repository for Umbrellight.com.
  4. Deploy to IPFS: Fleek will handle the deployment, pinning the site’s files to IPFS and generating a unique content identifier (CID) for your site. This CID is essential for accessing your site on the IPFS network.

Pinning in the context of IPFS refers to the process of ensuring that specific files or data are persistently stored and available on the network. When you add content to IPFS, it’s distributed across the network, but if no one — including you — pins that content, it could eventually be removed from nodes to free up space. Pinning prevents this by keeping your data permanently available on designated nodes, ensuring that it’s always accessible when requested. This is crucial for maintaining the integrity and availability of your website or files on IPFS, especially if they’re intended to be long-lasting and reliably accessible.

Step 3: Serving the Site through Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway

To ensure that your site is easily accessible to everyone, regardless of their familiarity with Web3, you can use Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway. This gateway acts as a bridge, allowing users to access IPFS-hosted content through a regular web URL. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Configure DNS Settings: In your domain registrar’s settings, adjust the DNS to point to Cloudflare’s IPFS gateway. This involves creating a CNAME record that links your domain to the IPFS gateway’s URL.
  2. Access Your Site: Once the DNS changes propagate, your site will be accessible via your usual domain name, but the content will be served from IPFS. This means that anyone visiting Umbrellight.com will experience the website hosted on a decentralized network.

To balance the transition to Web3 while maintaining accessibility for all users, I decided to keep my traditional website on the top-level domain, umbrellight.com. Meanwhile, I created a subdomain, ipfs.umbrellight.com, specifically to serve the IPFS-hosted version of the site. This approach allows visitors to experience the decentralized web through the subdomain, while still providing the familiar, conventionally hosted site on the main domain. It’s a way to introduce Web3 technology without disrupting the existing user experience.

The Benefits of Hosting on IPFS

By hosting your site on IPFS, you’re not only embracing the future of the internet, but you’re also reaping several benefits:

  • Increased Resilience: Your website is no longer reliant on a single server. It’s distributed across multiple nodes, making it more robust against downtime and attacks.
  • Faster Load Times: Content is retrieved from the nearest available node, which can result in faster load times for users.
  • Censorship Resistance: Because your site is decentralized, it’s much harder for any single entity to take it down.

Understanding the Limitations and Risks of IPFS

While IPFS offers a powerful and innovative approach to decentralized file storage, it’s important to be aware of its limitations and potential risks.

One of the primary challenges with IPFS is data persistence. Unlike traditional web hosting, where data is stored on dedicated servers, IPFS relies on a distributed network of nodes. If content isn’t actively pinned or widely shared, it can disappear from the network over time, making it inaccessible. This makes pinning essential, but it also means you might need to rely on third-party pinning services, which can introduce additional costs and dependencies.

Another consideration is security. While IPFS inherently provides resistance to censorship, it does not encrypt your data by default. This means that sensitive information could be exposed if not properly encrypted before being added to the network. Additionally, because IPFS content is identified by its hash, any changes to a file will result in a completely new hash, which can complicate content management and version control.

There’s also the issue of scalability. IPFS is still a relatively new technology, and while it’s designed to be efficient, it can face performance challenges with large-scale deployments or when dealing with high-demand content. The network’s performance can vary depending on the availability and proximity of nodes hosting the content.

Finally, user accessibility remains a hurdle. While gateways like Cloudflare’s IPFS gateway make it easier for the average user to access IPFS-hosted content, the broader adoption of IPFS is still limited. Many users are unfamiliar with the technology, and without proper gateways, accessing IPFS content can be cumbersome.

These factors highlight the need to carefully consider how and when to use IPFS, particularly for mission-critical applications. While it holds great promise for the future of the web, it’s important to weigh these limitations against the benefits to determine if IPFS is the right solution for your needs.
